Military support from the U.S. to the Baltics has increased with the passage of the defense authorization act – N.D.A.A. (S. 1790)
Take a look at the military assistance highlights:
- Increased funding for a joint military program for the Baltics from $100 million to $125 million.
- Increased funding for the European Deterrence Initiative (EDI) by $734.4 million. EDI is a military program that deters Russian westward military expansion.
- Reaffirmed support of NATO
How did we get here?
Members of Congress are generally supportive of steps to protect NATO and EDI. However, additional action was required for the increase of the joint military program to $125 million. This required an amendment by Representative Shimkus to S. 1790. Representative Shimkus is of Lithuanian descent, is the Republican chair of the House Baltic Caucus, and is a dear friend of the Baltic-American community.
Cheers to the victory!
