The Proper Way to Watch the State of the Union

The “State of the Union” is a bit of a misnomer. This is a scavenger hunt.

The State of the Union is a chance for the President to lay out his priorities for the year and to see how Congress reacts.

So, as Baltivists, what is on our scavenger hunt?

We need to look if the President will mention any of these legislative issues:

  • Fighting fake news
  • Fighting corruption
  • Energy Security
  • Cybersecurity
  • NATO/European military security

Since this is an election year, one thing to watch out for is if President Trump will ask to protect the integrity of our elections by combating disinformation campaigns. This is something the Baltics are too familiar with and recognize as a major threat.

We also need to watch for Congress’ reaction.

  • Does only one party clap when the President mentions something?
  • Is there enthusiastic support for our issues?
  • Is there a lack of enthusiasm for our issues?

We’ll check back in after the State of the Union Scavenger Hunt. Happy scavenging!

  1. Back in the day, Scouts used to initiate younger members with something called a Snipe Hunt. Sitting under a tree at night with a paper bag waiting for something which never came. Hope that’s not what we see.
